Before you allow your children to be subjected to the dubious wonders of drugs like Ritalin, read this article by Dr. Breggin.  He outlines exactly what various drugs actually do to the brain.  It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear of some child’s parent resorting to drugs to ‘handle’ any trouble they might be having.

Believe it or not, Doctors are paid big bucks to hand out these things and most of them have not done their own proper research as to side effects etc.

Psychiatric Drug Facts

Here is a short excerpt from the article:

“Antipsychotic drugs, including both older and newer ones, cause shrinkage (atrophy) of the brain in many human brain scan studies and in animal autopsy studies. The newer atypicals especially cause a well-documented metabolic syndrome including elevated blood sugar, diabetes, increased cholesterol, obesity and hypertension. They also produce dangerous cardiac arrhythmias and unexplained sudden death, and they significantly reduce longevity. In addition, they cause all the problems of the older drugs, such as Thorazine and Haldol, including tardive dyskinesia, a largely permanent and sometimes disabling and painful movement disorder caused by brain damage and biochemical disruptions.

Risperdal in particular but others as well cause potentially permanent breast enlargement in young boys and girls. The overall risk of harmful long-term effects from antipsychotic drugs exceeds the capacity of this review. Withdrawal from antipsychotic drugs can cause overwhelming emotional and neurological suffering, as well as psychosis in both children and adults, making complete cessation at times very difficult or impossible.

Despite their enormous risks, the newer antipsychotic drugs are now frequently used off-label to treat anything from anxiety and depression to insomnia and behavior problems in children. Two older antipsychotic drugs, Reglan and Compazine, are used for gastrointestinal problems, and despite small or short-term dosing, they too can cause problems, including tardive dyskinesia.” (…more..)

“I don’t believe I have ever heard a knowledgeable, well-trained psychiatrist make such a preposterous claim [that patients have a chemical imbalance], except perhaps to mock it…In truth, the ‘chemical imbalance’ notion was always a kind of urban legend—never a theory seriously propounded by well-informed psychiatrists.” –Ronald W. Pies, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, the State University of New York and Tufts University School of Medicine

I don’t agree with everything in this article.  It is well researched and from the psychiatric industry itself, suggesting that materials such as the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (The go to manual of Psychiatry) should be abolished.  The article also points out there are not physical tests for any of the ‘diseases’ listed in this and other manuals of the like.

No More Psychiatric Labels

Excerpt:
“Abstract

This article argues that psychiatric diagnoses are not valid or useful. The use of psychiatric diagnosis increases stigma, does not aid treatment decisions, is associated with worsening long-term prognosis for mental health problems,

The failure of decades of basic science research to reveal any specific biological or psychological marker that identifies a psychiatric diagnosis is well recognized.

Guns and violence.  There have been some terrible tragedies recently – the school shootings in America.  The anti gun people and the pro gun people are seriously ‘up in arms’ against each other.  This is actually a great result and behind it a wonderful tactic if you can get away with it.  A pretty standard way for someone to keep people distracted and upset.

There is a technique for keeping two parties fighting each other.  This is an incredibly useful tool and can be applied anywhere in life.  For example if you want to break up a marriage: tell false things to each spouse involved but make sure that you stay ‘invisible’ and you will have them successfully fighting each other. It is important that neither one know that you are the one spreading the falsehoods or rumors.  If this is found out then it will not usually work. This can easily be done with marriages or countries.  This is how you keep wars going.  Make sure that you are spreading false information about the other country.  Do that with both countries and you get some pretty serious hate going on.  But you have to make sure that both sides are unaware of what you are doing.  You definitely want to hide that you are the one spreading the falsehoods.

This can be done pretty easily in many aspects of life if you are careful to make sure that the falsehoods are not too obviously false and you stay well hidden as the culprit.

Why would you do this?  Any number of reasons.  You want to steal a girlfiend or boyfriend. You are not happy with the person your son or daughter married and want them to break up.  You want to get someone you don’t like fired from a job.  A competitor has a better product than you and is taking your business. Just alter the truth a little.  Pretend to be helping – that is very effective  – when you are feeding the lies.

You want to destroy a small business.  How do you conflict the two partners in that business?  Spread some insidious rumors.  Use a lot of ‘everyone knows’ – generalizations work the best when spreading rumors.  But make sure that if you are targeting someone in a company that the reports are vague and confusing.  That will put more doubt into the mix and make it less likely for people to discern the truth.  If you can keep two partners in a company upset with bad news it will prevent them from being able to sort out the truth.  Even if the company is doing fairly well there are probably some “mess-ups” somewhere and it is easy enough to blow things out of proportion.  Keep nagging.  And don’t always communicate directly to the party or parties you are trying to get conflicted.  Communicate these things to the secretary or someone else close.  That puts in another layer and keeps you invisible.

It takes some work and conniving but is one of the best ways to destroy a company or marriage.  Or get someone fired.  And if you are good at it you can come out unscathed and probably profit from the destruction.

So, if you are running a country and you want to get anything done, you have to apply the above.  If you are a dictator or tyrant that is fine, you can do pretty much what you want.  But short of that you have to do something to keep the people of your country fighting each other so you can get the things accomplished that you feel are needed.  You have to keep them distracted from the important policy decisions.  The above technique will work to keep groups fighting each other and also distracted enough that you can pass any laws that most people will either agree with or be to busy to pay attention to.

Create or monopolize on tragedies.

But even with these you must make sure that there are confusions to keep the rumour mills running.  Use the media to give conflicting reports and vagaries.  This will do a couple of things:  It will keep people’s attention generally stuck on the tragedy.  Nothing like vagaries and a mystery to do that. And it will keep the two sides of the debate at each others throats.

The above can be a lot of work but has proven to be successful down through the centuries.  Most people will go where the media points them.  Just have them(the media) say confusing things in an officious way.  If you can get falsehoods into the newspapers and other news outlets, all the better.  The majority of people will not believe that the media would lie to them.  And most are too cowardly to confront the real evil that this is. It is pretty easy to tell the media what to do these days. And those ‘alternate’ media sources need not worry you.  Just pass some false rumors about them – run the same gambit I have outlined above. Any that get too powerful, you can always infiltrate.

All this gives you(the leader of the country) time to do the things necessary to put in place the laws and infrastructure that will make your government stronger and more able to control the people.  The majority of people are completely willing to give up their freedoms and have the government run things for them.  If you doubt this just look at the history of Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Russia or different periods in China.

The whole labeling thing by psychiatrists really ticks me off.  How to slam and oppress an active child.  He can’t keep his attention on what YOU want him to keep his or her attention on so YOU label him or her ADHD instead of something positive.  psychiatric labelingMakes for a pretty dangerous environment for the child.  He or she cannot be his or herself anymore.

What if Mozart was labeled ADHD because all he could do was write music.  Or Da Vinci was thrown in the nuthouse because his scribblings were fanciful and unrealistic.  Over the centuries in other cultures people were ostracized from their society because they did not conform and many talents were squashed BUT with drugs like ritalin the evil bastards(psychiatrists) are able to neutralize thousands and millions of children all the while having the general population thinking they are helping.

Hey – to coin a phrase “Say no to drugs!”

Or one that I like much better: “Drugs are for losers!”

I was reading the Rodale website for recipes and I happened upon their remedies section.  They have some sensible depression remedies.

I personally like the one, “Make Someone’s Day“.   I try and make a friendly, uplifting comment to someone every day.

Perhaps you are lacking sleep (“Get some zzz’s“).  Maybe you just need to make some space with their “Get Outside” suggestion.  Perhaps you are B-vitamin deficient.

Try one different suggestion each day for 10 days and see how you feel.

Sir Ken Robinson talks about schools killing creativity in this Ted.com video:

http://blog.ted.com/2006/06/sir_ken_robinso.php

Below is an excerpt from his talk.  You can listen to this particular section of the video at 15:00.  I highly recommend the entire video if you have some time.

I’m doing a new book at the moment called Epiphany which is based on a series of interviews with people about how they discovered their talent. I’m fascinated by how people got to be there. It’s really prompted by a conversation I had with a wonderful woman who maybe most people have never heard of, she’s called Gillian Lynne, have you heard of her? Some have. She’s a choreographer and everybody knows her work. She did Cats, and Phantom of the Opera, she’s wonderful. I used to be on the board of the Royal Ballet, in England, as you can see, and Gillian and I had lunch one day and I said Gillian, how’d you get to be a dancer? And she said it was interesting, when she was at school, she was really hopeless. And the school, in the 30s, wrote her parents and said, “We think Gillian has a learning disorder.” She couldn’t concentrate, she was fidgeting. I think now they’d say she had ADHD. Wouldn’t you? But this was the 1930s and ADHD hadn’t been invented at this point. It wasn’t an available condition. People weren’t aware they could have that.

Anyway she went to see this specialist, in this oak-paneled room, and she was there with her mother and she was led and sat on a chair at the end, and she sat on her hands for 20 minutes while this doctor talked to her mother about all the problems Gillian was having at school. And at the end of it — because she was disturbing people, her homework was always late, and so on, little kid of 8 — in the end, the doctor went and sat next to Gillian and said, “Gillian I’ve listened to all these things that your mother’s told me, and I need to speak to her privately.” He said, “Wait here, we’ll be back, we won’t be very long,” and they went and left her.

But as they went out the room, he turned on the radio that was sitting on his desk, and when they got out the room, he said to her mother, “Just stand and watch her.” And the minute they left the room, she said, she was on her feet, moving to the music. And they watched for a few minutes and he turned to her mother and said, “Mrs. Lynne, Gillian isn’t sick; she’s a dancer. Take her to a dance school.”

I said, “What happened?”

She said, “She did. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was. We walked in this room and it was full of people like me, people who couldn’t sit still. People who had to move to think.” Who had to move to think. They did ballet, they did tap, they did jazz, they did modern, they did contemporary. She was eventually auditioned for the Royal Ballet School, she became a soloist, she had a wonderful career at the Royal Ballet, she eventually graduated from the Royal Ballet School and founded her own company, the Gillian Lynne Dance Company, and met Andrew Lloyd Weber.

She’s been responsible for some of the most successful musical theater productions in history, she’s given pleasure to millions, and she’s a multimillionaire.

Somebody else might have put her on medication and told her to calm down.

ADHD Drug Treatment and its Dangers:

The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) website states: “Ritalin is …structurally and pharmacologically similar to amphetamines and cocaine and has the same dependency profile of cocaine and other stimulants.”

Even the milder side effects of ADHD drug treatment include such problems as behavior disturbances, psychotic episodes, anxiety, restlessness, agitation, amnesia, confusion, lack of emotion and hostility.

ADHD child behavior is also often misdiagnosed.  Child and teen labeling of ADHD often preclude a proper medical exam with an accurate diagnosis.  Ensure that a prescribed medication is not just masking a symptom or symptoms.  It is better to find the real cause of the symptoms by finding the underlying problem or you could make the situation worse.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
    ~Mahatma Gandhi

As you read about psychiatric abuses, over-medication and other issues in this and other websites, you might wonder what you can do about it.  Below is a list which is by no means a complete list of what you can do.

– if you don’t like a prescription drug ad in a magazine, email the publisher or mail a letter and tell them what you think

– ask for a second opinion if you disagree with your doctor’s diagnosis and/or ask for more tests

– get ALL the information if you are given a prescription – find out what a drug’s side effects are and if there are alternatives

– as a parent, volunteer to help in class

– volunteer as a big brother or sister

– take a long walk before you decide anything

– start a blog

Say something.  Ask questions.  Knowledge will arm you with choices.

Doctors should give you information about a treatment’s side effects and if there are alternatives.  This is done in order for you to decide whether or not you wish to undergo such treatment. This process of understanding the risks and benefits of treatment is known as informed consent. It is based on the moral and legal premise of patient autonomy.  This is the right of patients to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence their decision. Patient autonomy does allow for health care providers to educate the patient but does not allow the health care provider to make the decision for the patient. You as the patient have the right to make decisions about your own health and medical conditions.
